Master of the Worlds,
you commanded us to bring the Perpetual Offering at its appointed time;
and have the Kohanim perform their service,
and the Leviïm [sing and play music] on the platform,
and the Yisraëlim [attend] at their Ma’amad.
And now, because of our sins,
the Holy Temple is destroyed,
and the Perpetual Offering discontinued;
we have neither a Kohen at his service,
nor a Levi on his platform,
nor a Yisraëli at his Ma’amad.
However, you declared:
“Let [the offering of] our lips replace bull [sacrifices].” (Hosea 14:3)
Therefore may it be your will
YHVH our elo’ah, and elo’ah of our ancestors,
that the prayer of our lips be considered
and accepted and regarded favorably before you,
as if we had offered the Perpetual Offering at its appointed time,
and stood in attendance at its service,
as we said,
“Let [the offering of] our lips replace bull [sacrifices]” (Hosea 14:3)

This is the Ribon ha-Olamim prayer contained within the concluding readings of the Qarbanot section as an introductory preface to the Morning prayers. In most siddurim in which the Karbanot are included, this prayer appears immediately after Ana b’Khoaḥ and before the rules of Midrash Halakhah taught by Rebbi Yishmael.

The placement of the crucial proof-text verse from Hosea (14:3) distinguishes between the liturgical custom of Sefaradim and Ashkenazim. The latter place it before lakhen (“therefore”) and the former at the end. Since the verse is indeed critical to understanding how rabbinic Judaism validates prayer as a substitute for the Avodah of the Temple Service in the age after the Temple’s destruction, it follows that by repeating the verse we can further emphasize it, and this is my practice. —Aharon Varady
